Anticoagulant Pradaxa Linked to Serious Side Effects
Pradaxa is an anticoagulant marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim, the German pharmaceutical company with a US headquarters in Ridgefield, Connecticut. There is evidence that Pradaxa may lead to serious side effects, including uncontrolled bleeding, heart attacks, and even death. As a patient, you should be aware of these risks – and you should know your legal options if Pradaxa harms you.
Pradaxa was the first of a new generation of prescription anticoagulants to gain the United States Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") approval. The medicine helps patients with atrial fibrillation, or an irregular heartbeat, avoid blood clots and strokes.
Now, Boehringer Ingelheim has reported that Pradaxa has been linked to 250 deaths around the world, according to Bloomberg news service.
Recent FDA reports reveal that there were 505 cases of hemorrhaging reported to the FDA in the first quarter of 2011, shortly after the medicine was approved for preventing stroke and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation.
Research recently published in the Archives of Internal Medicine shows that Pradaxa could boost the risk of a heart attack or other acute coronary syndrome by 33 percent.
The FDA is conducting a safety review of Pradaxa based on reports that the medication has caused bleeding in excess of what is typically expected as a side effect of anticoagulants. Two studies have indicated that patients on Pradaxa have a higher instance of uncontrollable bleeding than is typical with anticoagulant drugs.
There are several key signs that could indicate that you are suffering from serious Pradaxa side effects, including uncontrolled internal bleeding. Some symptoms to look for include:
- Discolored urine that is brownish or pink;
- Bowel movements that look like tar and are red or black in color;
- Bruises that are unanticipated or hard to explain;
- Abnormal pain or swelling in joints or other body parts; and
- Dizziness, headaches or weakness.
It is very important to contact your doctor or other health-care provider immediately if you notice symptoms of uncontrolled bleeding, which can cause death if not treated. Some signs that you need immediate medical attention include:
- Frequent nose bleeds;
- Urine discoloration;
- Bleeding gums;
- Vomit that looks like coffee grounds; and
- Excessive menstrual or vaginal bleeding.
People who are 75 years old or older face a greater risk of suffering serious Pradaxa side effects, as do patients with recurring intestinal bleeding, stomach ulcers, and kidney conditions. Patients who take ketoconazole tablets (Nizoral®) or dronedarone (Multaq®) also have a higher risk of experiencing side effects from Pradaxa.
Not only can Pradaxa cause uncontrollable internal bleeding, but it has also been linked to other complications, including:
- Stomach pain;
- Bloating; and
In addition to spotting Pradaxa-related side effects, it is also important for you to find out about your legal options if an unsafe medicine has caused you or someone you love to suffer needlessly.
