Kugel Mesh Hernia Patches

Since December 22, 2005, several types of Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patches have been recalled after the manufacturer received numerous reports of serious injuries due to a dangerous product defect.  The Composix Kugel Mesh Patch - sometimes called the Kugel Mesh, Bard Hernia Patch or Composix Hernia Patch - is used to repair ventral (incisional) hernias caused by thinning or stretching of scar tissue that forms after surgery. The patch is placed behind the hernia defect through a small incision and is then held open by a “memory recoil ring” that allows the patch to be folded for insertion and later spring open and lay flat once it is in place.  These hernia patches have been recalled because the "memory recoil ring" that opens the Composix Kugel Mesh Patch after it has been inserted into the intra-abdominal space can break, leading to serious and life-endangering bowel perforations and/or chronic intestinal fistulae (abnormal connections or passageways between the intestines and other organs).

Surgeons and hospitals are advised to cease using the Kugel Mesh products with codes and lots affected by the recall and to return unused units to the manufacturer. Patients who have received one of the recalled devices should seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as unexplained or persistent abdominal pain, fever, tenderness at the implant site, or other unusual symptoms potentially related to ring breakage.  Please contact your doctor immediately if you develop symptoms that can be associated with ring breakage in a Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Device.
