Roundup Weed Killer Linked to Cancer
On August 10, 2021, an appeals court in San Francisco, California upheld a 2019 verdict for more than $2 billion that was awarded to a couple who claimed they fell ill with cancer after using the herbicide for more than thirty years. This was one of the ten largest product-defect awards in U.S. history and reflected the jury’s stated belief that Monsanto’s negligence was reckless and that a large portion of the award was intended to punish the corporation. That verdict was reduced by the trial judge to $86.7 million. This is the first court decision since Germany-based Bayer set aside an additional $4.5 billion to settle thousands of Roundup suits, bringing the total amount that it has set aside to settle the cases to more than $16 billion. The company also announced that it will remove Roundup from the U.S. consumer market in 2023.
Ury & Moskow, LLC lawyers are working to recover for clients injured by Roundup’s main ingredient, Glyphosate. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has demonstrated a possible link between glyphosate and deadly forms of cancer, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Many other researchers in the United States and across the world have confirmed IARC’s findings, and several U.S. juries have already held Roundup’s makers liable for damages.
Glyphosate is the key ingredient in a variety of commercial herbicides, most notably the Roundup family of products. This plant-killing chemical is so pervasive in homes and farms around the world that anyone can be exposed to it. Roundup was originally manufactured by the agrochemical giant Monsanto, and is now made by Monsanto as a division of Bayer.
The cancer linked to Roundup and Glyphosate is Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. NHL’s are a class of blood cancer types that originate in the lymphatic system, can be physically and financially devastating. Ury & Moskow, LLC attorneys know how devastating a non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis is to you and your family.
